Karaağaç or Kharcha is populated since Byzantine times. Antique name is “Charkeia/Chartzia”. There are well preserved Byzantine tombs in the area . The tomb architecture is exactly the same as in the catacombs of Kyrenia. The tombs entrances are concealed by the evergreen shrub, "Skinia" with the entrances blocked by large stones. This necropolis is a sure sign of a near-by Byzantine town. One of the main reasons of continuous inhabitation of the area is the existence of well-preserved water spring located at the centre of the modern Karaağaç village.

Water Spring is the only running natural water in north cyprus and its drinkable. Locals do not need to buy bottled water from the market.Its also the main center of attraction of the village, especially in summer. People are visiting the spring regularlly as it is cool in the summer. There is also a small park near the water spring providing a good opportunity to get away from the stress of city life. Karaağaç can be considered as one of the safest places in this covid infested world.

A local artist made a beautiful statue near the water. He is inspired by an old tale (Skazka). It is believed that this old man lived in the village a long while ago with his wife and they were visiting the water spring togather regularly. Unfortunately one day he lost his beloved wife but kept on visiting the water spring every day hoping that he could see her wife again. Locals name him aşık dede (dyadya lyubov in russian language). People believe that drinking water from this spring may one day bring happiness into their life.
